Type 2 diabetes is serious. 13.6 million people in the UK are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is also two to four times more likely in people of South Asian descent and Black Caribbean or Black African descent.
The theme for Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week (23-29 May) is #HealthierHack, where you are encouraged to share your healthier hacks on social media (i.e. getting off the bus a stop earlier to get extra steps in or swapping ghee for olive oil).
Diabetes UK has lots of examples of healthier hacks on their website. Share yours on social media using #HealthierHack this Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week!
Check your RISK
Leaving Type 2 diabetes untreated can lead to long-term health problems. That’s why it is extremely important to find out if you are at risk.
Finding out your risk is free only takes a few minutes using the Healthier You risk calculator. It could be the most important thing you do today. Make sure to have a tape measure handy as you’ll need to measure your waist.
NHS Healthier You Programme
If you’re at moderate or high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, you will be invited to sign up to our local Healthier You programme.
The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme in Essex will help you take control of your health, supporting you to make changes to your diet, weight and the amount of exercise you do.
Taking this kind of action now is very important as it can reduce your risk of, or even stop you developing Type 2 diabetes.
